Principles

  • Based on observing the child and creating new ideas for aiding his/her development
  • Designed to develop the whole personality of the child at his/her own natural rate of progress
  • Ensures the child is treated with respect
  • Relies on the basic principles of observation, individual liberty and a prepared environment aimed at helping children to help themselves
  • Prepares an atmosphere of freedom with clearly defined guidelines and a challenging environment

  • Provides the child with powers of observation, awareness, control, coordination, discrimination, and judgement

Founder:  Dr. Maria Montessori (1870-1952)

  • Maria Montessori was the first woman medical doctor in Italy, was also a teacher and anthropologist, twice nominated for the Nobel Peace prize.
  • She started her first kindergarten in Rome in 1907; her accomplishments here earned her worldwide acclaim.
  • She observed children and how they learn. This led to her developing a method of education that enables children to reach their full potential in a carefully prepared environment.
